There are different strategies to take into consideration when creating a composition. To engage the viewer and direct their eye contact using relationship between figure and ground is important. It makes the piece communicate beyond the literal. When placing elements within a composition there are things to be aware of. For example, tension, contrast of negative space, the outer contour, cropping, position, relative size of elements, contrast between linearity, mass, angles, and curves. Every element is set to create a composition. So where you place them effects how the viewer will portray it. For example, placing elements such as city scape outlines create more of a realistic piece and contrast can create a sense of depth while drawing the viewer into the composition. Overlapping elements creates a sense of dimension and space. With elements that a designer decides to use within a composition, each of them should contribute to the other making the piece cohesive.
