Certain types of contrast can be more effective than others within a composition. When the viewer has immediate impact with the composition large vs. small, spacing or density, and value are all said to be the most effective forms of contrast to the viewer. Each of these things serve a purpose, that being to create meaningful designs. Contrast can also be made through tension of elements.
