Formal Congruence

When configurations of type display attribute in an image the two are said to be formally congruent. Similarities can be found in shape, texture, value, and rhythm. Text itself can be used to create shapes as well as the contour of an image. Texture can be created with text. A congruence can be made between text and an image by the font choice you make. Value congruence can be established when considering darkness or lightness, scale change, spacing change, or transparency change. One of the most subtle relationships of type and image is rhythm. This is established with spacing. When considering the relationship you want to establish between type and an image, the type should repeat the images attributes. Or re-establish the images logic. Whether it be shape, texture, value, or rhythm, you want to create a congruence between the text and the image.
