Out of all the classes I took these past few semesters I took an interest in my design classes. At first I struggled with the concept of design. Going into the class I had the idea that design was like art and you can just make it look pretty. Well, it wasn’t long until the first or second class when our teacher told us design is more of a strategy. There is more of a logic behind every element within the design. He continues to remind us of that every class.
It wasn’t until my second semester of design that I fully grasped that idea. The first semester I felt I was just making things look ok and trying to get used to the software. Now, I feel that I have the software down enough to focus more on the designing. I am starting to enjoy the process of thinking about the movement of the viewer’s eye, the hierarchy of each element, the dramatic impact of a good font choice, and so much more. In the end, you end up with a unified look, but really there is so much thought and intention behind it. I never knew that until design class. Now I find myself looking at labels and signs and thinking about what the designer’s intentions behind the design were. It’s a crazy thing. Little elements that are so simple determine whether or not your design is effective or not.
